WASHINGTON, D.C. — Bucs quarterback Tom Brady turned to President Joe Biden Tuesday outside the White House and poked fun at himself about being the NFL’s elder statesman.

“Personally for me, it’s nice to be back here,” the 43-year-old Brady said. “We had a game in Chicago where I forgot what down it was. I lost track of one down in 21 years of playing, and they started calling me ‘Sleepy Tom.’ Why would they do that to me?”

Despite winning six Lombardi Trophies with the Patriots, Brady hadn’t been back to the White House since 2005 until he joined his Bucs teammates on the South Lawn Tuesday, where they were honored by Biden for winning Super Bowl 55.

Biden praised the Bucs for sticking together during a difficult 7-5 start and coming together to win eight games in a row, becoming the first team to win a Super Bowl in its home stadium.

But the event featured quite an exchange between Biden, at 78 the oldest president to hold office, and Brady, the oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

“It didn’t look good at one point,’’ Brady said. “We were 7-5 and struggling a little bit as the president alluded to. But we found our rhythm. We got on a roll. A lot of people didn’t think we could’ve won. In fact, I think about 40 percent of the people still don’t think we won.”

“I understand that,” Biden replied.

Live: President Biden welcomes the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the White House in honor of their Super Bowl LV Championship.

— The White House (@WhiteHouse) July 20, 2021
Biden spoke about his own football career at Delaware and called up receiver Chris Godwin, who hails from his home state of Pennsylvania.

Godwin said during earlier conversations he had an instant connection with Biden. Godwin said Biden called him to wish him luck before Super Bowl 55.

“It’s was awesome,” Godwin said. “It was an honor for me to have that Delaware connection.”

Biden also acknowledged the Lightning, who have won the past two Stanley Cup championships, if not by name, certainly by deed.

“We have to say that the fans down there in Western Florida are having a pretty good year this year, I tell you,” Biden said. “You know, the Stanley Cup, and in addition to the Super Bowl. But, you know, we’re making a pretty strong case to start calling Tampa the ‘City of Champions.’”

Although the visit was mostly ceremonial and celebratory in nature, politics are around every corner of the White House.

Biden lauded the Bucs for donating nearly 200,000 meals during the pandemic, leading a drive for voter registration and utilizing Raymond James Stadium as a center for COVID-19 vaccinations.

Tom Brady, along with Bruce Arians and several Tampa Bay Buccaneers players, visited the White House at President Joe Biden’s invitation Tuesday.
“It’s great, I think it feels like it gives us some validity or weight of some of the stuff we were doing around Tampa, especially voting and getting people to vote,” guard Ali Marpet said. “That’s what coach Arians is all about, right? That’s what as an organization we really tried to be leaders in. So that was a big point of emphasis for her, and it was great to have that theme be united.”

Arians got emotional when he spoke at the event, even though he had been to the White House before as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He encouraged the U.S. Congress to come together the way the Bucs did last season.

“We live by three words,” Arians said. “Trust, loyalty and respect. We don’t have any rules. You have those, you’ll have accountability and you’ll be able to do anything you want. One team, one cause.”

Then he turned to Biden. “I hope the Senate and the House start helping you,” Arians said.

Later, Arians reiterated his remarks. “Come together and get something done,” he said. “Quit fighting. It’s not two countries, it’s one country.”

The Glazer family, including Bryan, Joel, Avram, Ed and Darcie Glazer Kassewitz, presented Biden, the 46th President of the United States, with a No. 46 jersey.

Brady nodded to tight end Cameron Brate, to whom he threw the Lombardi Trophy across the Hillsborough River during the Bucs’ celebratory boat parade.

“We’re not going to throw the trophy today, right Cam?” Brady said.

Biden turned to the assembled Bucs players behind him and told them to get vaccinated.

“Amen,” Arians said.

Earlier, Smith posted a video of a conversation he had with Brady while walking outside the White House on Instagram.

“You got residency here?” Smith asked the seven-time Super Bowl champion.

“It’s been a long time for me,” Brady said.

The Bucs had 41 players attend the event. Notably absent were some key stars such as wide receiver Mike Evans, tight end Rob Gronkowski and linebacker Lavonte David.

It was the first visit by a Super Bowl champion to the White House in four years. The last team to accept an invitation was the Patriots in 2017. Brady did not make that trip.

It also marked the first time a team from Tampa Bay has celebrated a championship with such an invitation.

After the Bucs won Super Bowl 37, the war in Iraq prevented a visit to the White House. When the Lightning won its first Stanley Cup in 2003-04, there was a lockout of NHL players. Last summer, the Lightning were denied again due to COVID-19.

The White House visit kicked off a week of reflection for the Super Bowl champions. On Thursday, the team will receive its championship rings during a private ceremony in Tampa.

Quarterbacks have orientation on Friday, and the full squad reports Saturday.

“I can’t wait for Thursday night to be over and get our rings and get onto next year,” Arians said. “We show up to camp Saturday, and it’s a whole new team. This team is put to bed and a new one gets to wake up and start working.”

The Detroit Lions are replacing tight end Jesse James with a familiar face. Recently the Lions signed Josh Hill.

Hill had been a cap casualty of the New Orleans Saints, who entered the offseason having the league’s worst cap situation. With the 2021 NFL salary cap, decreasing teams are forced to navigate their way from $198.2 million in 2020 to $182.5 million in 2021.

Teams always plan for a steadily increasing cap, so with the cap decreasing due to the coronavirus pandemic, it complicates things. Many players (mostly on playoff contenders) are willingly shifting some of the money from salary to a bonus that won’t count against the cap to keep the band together.

Recently the Detroit Lions opted to part ways with Christian Jones, Jesse James, Desmond Trufant, Justin Coleman, and star receiver Kenny Golladay.

The Lions are back in year one of what feels like a neverending rebuild. This is a necessary regime change; this new group deserves to re-shape this roster and get their type of players replacing the lackluster roster the previous regime left behind.

Josh Hill will be a nice complement to T.J. Hockenson for the Detroit Lions.
Hill’s play resembles the play of his former position and now head coach Dan Campbell. We know the Detroit Lions will be committed to a smash-mouth style of offense which justifies this addition.

The veteran tight end turns 31 in May caught eight passes last season on ten targets totaling 46 yards and one touchdown.

Hill is expected to be utilized primarily as a blocker in offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn’s two tight end sets.

I expect Lynn to use Hunter Bryant throughout the 2021 season, but Hill will likely be utilized as a red zone threat. Often we see these ‘blocking’ tight ends fit-up around the goal line like they are going to block but quickly release and catch a wide-open touchdown pass.

According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Hill produced a solid 72.8 run-blocking grade this past season but only provided the Saints with a wretched 47.6 mark as a pass-blocker. That pass-blocking grade was indeed the worst of his career.

Hill proved to be a stellar pass-blocker and mediocre run blocker through the first five years of his career. As he’s improved as a run blocker, he’s struggled as a pass blocker over the last few seasons.

I don’t fret much about the pass-blocking grade; it’s far more important to have a tight end that can fire off the line of scrimmage and help an offensive tackle chip a defensive end or bully an edge rusher/linebacker in the run game.

Last season, the Buffalo Bills had some question marks surrounding their tight end position coming into the season. While there was clarity at the top of the depth chart, the back end of the group left Bills fans wondering what the team would do at final cut-downs.

The tight end position has been one where the coaching staff has kept more players rather than less. Since 2018, Buffalo has entered the regular season with at least four tight ends on the roster each year. Granted, one of those years (2019) saw the Bills keep five tight ends initially thanks to injuries, and another (2020) saw the Bills keep three and a player whose professional position had yet to be defined, but the coaches in Buffalo always seem to keep one more tight end than I’d like to see them keep.

In today’s installment of “90 players in 90 days,” we profile that 2020 undefined player—an undrafted free agent who made the most of his limited opportunities.

Name: Reggie Gilliam

Number: 81

Position: TE

Height/Weight: 6’ 244 lbs

Age: 23 (24 on 8/20/2021)

Experience/Draft: 2; signed as UDFA with Bills following the 2021 NFL Draft

College: Toledo

Acquired: UDFA signing

Financial situation (per Spotrac): Gilliam enters the second year of his three-year rookie contract, a pact worth a total of $2.305 million. For the 2021 season, Gilliam is set to count $786,666 against the salary cap. The Bills are on the hook for a dead-cap charge of $13,334 if he is released.

2020 Recap: Gilliam made the team out of training camp in part due to a foot injury that Tommy Sweeney suffered. While Gilliam was a hybrid FB/TE coming into camp, the team listed him as a tight end as they transitioned to the regular season, and when he did see time on offense, that’s where he lined up for the most part. Gilliam only appeared on 81 offensive snaps, but he appeared on 189 special teams snaps—good for ninth on the roster in that phase of the game. Gilliam caught two passes for 16 yards, hauling in one touchdown pass among his two total targets. He made two tackles on special teams, forcing one fumble. Gilliam appeared in 14 games as a rookie, missing two games late in the year due to what was listed as a knee/hamstring injury.

Positional outlook: Gilliam finds himself in the middle of a positional battle that includes some familiar faces (Tommy Sweeney, Dawson Knox, and Nate Becker) alongside some newcomers (Jacob Hollister and Quintin Morris). Given his experience as a fullback, it’s also possible that he could be asked to convert back to the offensive backfield at some point this summer. There are no true fullbacks on Buffalo’s current roster.

2021 Offseason: Gilliam is healthy and he participated in OTAs.

2021 Season outlook: Gilliam’s status is interesting. I believe he’s going to make the team, as his special teams role is one that he thrived in while at Toledo (he blocked six kicks in college). His versatility gives the Bills a “heavy” backfield option if they so choose on offense, and now that he’s spent a year with the tight ends, he can line up there and hold his own when necessary. The Bills love to use three tight end sets around the goal line, and that’s where we saw Gilliam most often last year. In my head, I’ve been viewing Gilliam’s greatest competition for a roster spot as Sweeney, who is working his way back from the aforementioned foot injury and myocarditis suffered last year, but Gilliam may also be competing with Taiwan Jones for a role as the special teams running back spot. “Sledge” is one of my favorite back-end-of-the-roster types but, realistically, he’s somewhere on that bubble between the last four on the roster and the last four off of it.
