The Chicago Bears re-signed safety Tashaun Gipson to a one-year deal to maintain some stability in the defensive backfield in 2021.
Gipson had a solid 2020 season, where he started all 16 games and recorded 66 tackles, seven pass deflections, and tied for Nike Tashaun Gipson Jersey, a team-high two interceptions. And while it took awhile for the Bears to re-sign him, it doesn’t come as a surprise.
Following some shake-up in the secondary with the departures of cornerbacks Kyle Fuller and Buster Skrine, Gipson’s return brings stability to the safety position as new defensive coordinator Sean Desai steps in.
While safety was among the Bears’ top needs heading into the NFL draft, the Gipson re-signing all but indicates that safety won’t be a big need in the draft. Chicago has several positional needs that will take precedence, including offensive tackle, Red Tashaun Gipson Jersey, cornerback, wide receiver and quarterback.
That’s not to say the Bears won’t land a developmental safety in the later rounds. But, for now, they seem content riding with the safety duo of Eddie Jackson and Gipson.
