Our training camp preview series continues with a look at tight end:

The Characters

Dallas Goedert: It’s Goedert’s time to shine. After three years in Zach Ertz’s massive shadow, Goedert will get to earn a shiny new contract with a season of non-stop playing time. Goedert needs to take the position and run with it this year to cash in. – Lock

Richard Rodgers: Brought back following the offseason program, Rodgers is “Ertz insurance.” With the Eagles shopping Ertz, Rodgers appears to be the inevitable No. 2 tight end for the team. With the new staff likely to favor 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WRs), the talent dropoff from Ertz to Rodgers shouldn’t matter as much. – Lock

Zach Ertz: The three-time Pro Bowl tight end is being shopped for a trade. Ertz is looking for a change of scenery, while the Eagles could use the added cap space that Ertz’s departure would create ($8.5 million). Right now, it seems like Ertz will ultimately be sent packing. – On Trade Block

Caleb Wilson: After spending five games on the active roster last season, Wilson might have some edge in the No. 3 competition if Ertz leaves. Wilson needs to stand out on special teams during the preseason. – On The Bubble

Jack Stoll: The undrafted rookie actually has a shot at a roster spot. With the No. 3 TE battle likely to come down to a pack of afterthoughts and projects, there’s no reason to rule out Stoll. – On The Bubble

Jason Croom: Croom is the most experienced tight end behind Ertz, Rodgers and Goedert. Perhaps, that added experience will help Croom make the roster. – On The Bubble

Philadelphia Eagles Kenneth Gainwell Jersey

Hakeem Butler: The receiver-turned-tight end looked like he had a long way to go last season. With a new staff in place, the position switch could be a bit tougher. – Long shot

Tyree Jackson: Making the transition from quarterback to tight end, Jackson is likely pegged for the practice squad. However, given his intriguing size (6-7, 245 lbs.), he could be a dark horse if there’s an injury or two. – Long Shot
